From Satriale's Pork Store to the Cape Rouge (Eventually), Monday Afternoon

Well, last week's freak-out oddness had finally been shoved back into the repression closet after he'd processed roughly 33 percent of it and Linda was going to give him hell about it on Wednesday smoothed over, meaning Lucifer could go back to his regular bizarre way of doing things. Like scheduling dinner dates with Duke unilaterally.

Though he was finding himself in a bit of a state of indecision. See, he knew Duke enjoyed seafood, but figuring out his taste in other animal proteins was still a process.

He hovered in front of the venison at Satriale's. Then eyed the wild boar. Or perhaps keeping it simple with some pork? Hm.

He pulled up his phone and sent Duke a very informative text.

He clicked send.

"And now we wait," he told the butcher, who did not seem impressed.

Duke looked at the message and sighed.

Lucifer, being the contrarian that he was, sighed, took pictures of each of the pieces of meat in question, and texted those back to him.

With question marks.

Duke rolled his eyes good naturedly.

I was going to cook it myself, Lucifer texted him, in front of the increasingly bored butcher. But I'm also not going to turn down your cooking if you're offering.

YOURE going to cook? Duke grinned. whats most expensive?

I made your snogon breakfast on Saturday, seems only fair to keep it going, Lucifer texted, smirking. And the venison.

venison it is then Duke replied. should I bring dessert?

I'm always a fan, Lucifer said, gesturing helpfully at the venison.

The butcher rolled his eyes and got to packing up his order. Anything you need? I'll be dropping by once I get this sorted.

never say no to a nice bottle of wine Duke replied. should be good otherwise

Lucifer made another amused noise. See you in twenty minutes, he texted.

Then took his bag of venison and left to go get some wine.

And Duke got to work figuring out a dessert. He had plenty of fruit on hand -- as always -- and all the ingredients necessary to make a simple custard.

Creme brulee it was!

All right, twenty minutes had turned into more like thirty when Lucifer realized he wanted some asparagus as a side and a nice blackberry sauce for the steaks themselves and-- well, such were the dangers of food shopping.

Either way, he made it onto the Rouge holding two bags, and headed down into the galley immediately. "There we are."

"Had kind of a shopping spree, huh?" Duke teased. The extra ten minutes had given him time to make the custard and get the ramekins into the oven, so he came over to plant a quick kiss and take one of the bags. "Make yourself at home."

He knew that last bit wasn't necessary -- Lucifer felt enough at home to show up in the middle of the night if he needed to after all. They hadn't talked at all about that visit, and Duke wasn't about to bring it up if Lucifer didn't, though he was very curious as to what had set it off.

Yes, don't go ruining his recently restabilized denial here, Duke.

"I can't get venison and then throw in some peas from a jar or something for a side," Lucifer sighed, like it was obvious, and set the remaining bag down on the counter. He looked at Duke. "So how about those dessert plans?"

"Excuse you, fresh peas only when I'm on land," Duke said, setting the bag he'd grabbed down. "Dessert plans are underway. You can peek in the oven if you want, or be surprised."

Duke's bag was the one with the blackberries and the asparagus. Lucifer took the venison steaks out of the bag with care, setting them aside so they could properly reach room temperature.

"Oh, so you've been busy already," he teased. "And here I had half a mind to suggest having a drink first, before anything gets grilled or charred."

"It'll keep," Duke said. "Needs to chill in the fridge after the oven anyway." He pulled out the blackberries and asparagus and looked them over with a pleased smile before setting them on a cutting board. "We've got all the time in the world."

"Then you won't mind if I pour us some wine," Lucifer said, lifting the nice bottle of Pinot Noir he'd gotten up.

He didn't wait for Duke to answer; he pressed a kiss to the man's cheek as he bustled by to go grab the corkscrew.

"Not even a little," Duke agreed. He grabbed some glasses.

"I didn't think so," Lucifer said, tossing a grin at Duke over his shoulder.

See, all of this felt really good but not in a weird way! No, this was completely normal.

He took the corkscrew and opened up the bottle.

It was normal in every way!

So was needing to curl up with someone important to you sometimes when you were sad.

"So. You and Octavia had fun this weekend, huh?"

That sounded super fake, Duke.

"Friday was margarita night," Lucifer said, reaching to take one of the glasses from Duke. "She may have had a few too many, so Saturday was 'fatty food, juice, and head' morning. Seemed to clear up her hangover."

"I missed margarita night? Damn."

And Drunktavia! He loved Drunktavia.

"And that is an excellent choice of hangover cure. She probably would have just stayed in bed moaning, otherwise.
