Lucifer's Mansion, Sunday Night

It had certainly been a complicated week, hadn't it? Luckily, it had ended before the weekend, and Lucifer, Duke and Octavia had had all Saturday to recover.

That didn't mean Lucifer hadn't been slightly surprised that Octavia was still game for date night. But he had grasped it with every bit of enthusiasm he could foster. And yes, that did mean dinner had featured a genuinely ridiculous amount of tropical fruit.

"Suppose I should've put a protein in there," he mused, settling back and eyeing his empty dessert bowl with satisfaction.

There were some right by the hot tub, neatly stacked and ready for use. Lucifer reached up and pinched the bridge of his nose.

Funny. Now he felt helpless.

Octavia grabbed one of the towels to wrap it around herself.

Inevitably found herself watching him out of the corner of her eye as she was doing it, though.

There was very little that made him feel as much like a failure as... this. Not getting it right in the arena where he was supposed to be best. Making her feel that uneasy instead.

Lucifer was trying not to look as fundamentally hopeless as he felt, but he was bent over a bit, not looking at her.

Octavia swallowed a sigh, barely, and stepped back up to the tub. One of her hands was holding up her makeshift towel toga, keeping it at least somewhat secure around her, but the other...

Ended up at the back of his neck. Rubbed it gently.

Lucifer barely noticed for a moment.

But when he did, he did so with an exhale. "I'm sorry, darling," he said. "I don't mean to be ridiculous about it."

"Yeah, well," Octavia muttered, as her touch grew just a little firmer. "Feeling's mutual, I guess."

"I love you," Lucifer said. Slowly, his shoulders relaxed some. "I just want to be able to give you what you need without derailing us so often."

"You already do," Octavia told him quietly. "This doesn't happen that often. And it's not your fault, niron."

Lucifer tilted his head back as well as he could under the circumstances. "Am I going to sound very pathetic if I ask for a kiss?"

"Depends on if you ask pathetically."

She was already leaning down.

"May I have a kiss?" Lucifer asked.

Reaching up to cup the back of her head.

It didn't really need an answer at this point. So, Octavia's half-whispered "sha" was just a formality.

Right before she kissed him. Soft, but like it had meaning. Maybe an apology. Or something reaffirming. Reassuring.

Lucifer's eyes slid shut immediately, so clearly something worked. He made a quiet noise against her mouth, his fingers curling against the back of her neck.

There was insecurity in the kiss, yes. But also trust, and affection.

Octavia's hand had slid to his jaw, cupping it like she was helping him keep his head tilted.

Something in her chest unclenched at the noise he made, and she poured that into the kiss, too.

Lucifer's mouth wanted to fold into a smile, and it would have, were it not otherwise occupied. He ran his fingers idly up and down the back of her neck, more... reassuring than anything else.

Something in him unclenched, too.

"I love you," Octavia whispered, as she stole a breath. "Always."

"The feeling is utterly and delightfully mutual," Lucifer murmured, soft and warm."

"Even when it gets complicated?"

[my_own_advocate]

"Yes," Lucifer said, smiling up at her as if she was his world. "Always."

Octavia let her forehead meet his. Gently.

"I would've let you play me like an instrument," she whispered, "it was a good line." It felt important to say, but not half as important as this: "But you didn't do anything wrong."

"All right," Lucifer said. He let out an exhale, his fingers sliding down, along her cheek. "And I wanted to."

"I know you did," Octavia murmured.

"I often love it when I can get you there," Lucifer added quietly. "It feels... important. So when I fail, I..."

[okteiviakom]

"I know," Octavia said again, softly. "And I know it's probably not fair that sometimes you have to... fumble around in the dark."

"It's part of the game," Lucifer murmured. "The best we can do is... talk beforehand about what you would and wouldn't be all right with." A pause. "We've never quite done that, have we. Not to that extent."
