It was a nice, bright morning in Los Angeles, just a few days before Lucifer's self-imposed ultimatum about leaving ended. He remained on a quest to apologize for his therapist-inflicted overthinking and subsequent attempts to break up with Duke and Octavia, and so, today...

...Today it was time to spoil Octavia with a visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific.

He hummed brightly to himself as he paid for their tickets, then slid past the nice cashier and into the aquarium properly.

Gabriel ducked in before Lucifer could voice his displeasure at either of those comments, sidling up to Dad like the nosy little brat she was. "So, Dad. Since you're retiring, there'll be a new you, right? Who's it gonna be? If it's a secret, whisper it in my ear. I won't tell a soul."

Remiel rolled her eyes, striking the ground with her spear. "It's obvious who will replace Father. It's Amenadiel."

And those several steps were made a little longer by Octavia's curiosity about the windows.

But eventually they did round that corner, and, well.

"... This can't be good."

As was only right and fair. Duke rested his hands on her shins, gently rubbing up and down them.

"Where to dump his dear old dad, hopefully."

Lucifer caught the troubled look on his brother's face, and knew the man would jump in to go-- sacrifice his hopes of happiness on Father's throne yet again.

He wasn't going to let that happen.

"Actually, he's not," he said. "Amenadiel doesn't want it."

The crowd of angels exploded in loud, frenetic chatter.

"I'm going to get Him a girlfriend," Lucifer announced, "He's been single for millions of years, clearly He needs someone to get settled with."

Lucifer frowned. "Right, that's-- miss Lopez?" he said, squinting. He looked at Octavia. "Mind if I go on ahead, ensure you don't walk into some kind of slaughter?"

Because he was absolutely going to go see the sharks with Octavia if he could at all make it happen.

Octavia'shead turned, and her brow furrowed.

"... What?"

She sounded like she was judging that idea. Sorry.

Duke closed his eyes briefly at the explosion, and wondered if there was somewhere he and Octavia could slip off to.

He was so done with celestial family drama.

"Sure," Octavia said slowly.

Oh good, there was that wary feeling again.

"You going to set . . . God . . . up on a date?"

"It'd be perfect!" Lucifer argued. "He can annoy someone else for the rest of His life, happily ever after on a porch in Florida somewhere."

Lucifer nodded. He squeezed her hand gently. "Be back in a flash," he said, and barged valiantly on ahead.

He returned a few minutes later.

"Shark mauled a human," he said, "But after she died? They're about to get the body bag."

"And where do you think you're going to find the right woman for that?"

Octavia didn't close her eyes.

She just maybe took a half-step closer to Duke's side, watching the faces of the angels around them as they took in this bit of news.

"There are plenty of others who are worthy!" Zadkiel bellowed from the crowd.

More nervous babbling. Lucifer rubbed at his face. "How about we let Dad come to a decision?" he called.

"What's it going to be, Dad?" Gabriel asked, pulling on Dad's apron. He remained silent. "Come on, one of us is worthy, right? Someone qualified?"

"Qualified." Lucifer rubbed at his face. "I don't think any of them have even run as much as a taco truck," he muttered.

Several of his siblings shot him angry looks.

"What?" he said, raising his voice. "You think running a celestial kingdom is easy? What, you think knowing how to twirl a staff or look pretty is going to accomplish anything--"

"Are you trying to insult Hajobadiel?!"

You know what? Lucifer hadn't missed his family even one bit.

"Quiet," God snapped.

He raised the tongs in his hand. "One thing at a time," he said. "My retirement plan, then my successor."

He ignored the groans. "So who wants another hotdog?"

"I hate to harp on the whole 'God' thing, but -- I mean, is he even going to be into a human woman?"

"I'm an angel," Lucifer pointed out, "And yet I'm obviously into humans."

He took another thoughtful sip of his drink. "I should get Him an account on Tinder..."

"Yeah, but." Duke shook his head, slightly surprised that he had to say this. (And then surprised at himself for being surprised.) "You're extraordinary."

"Also no one just decided one day that you needed to find someone," Octavia pointed out.

... Well.

What was Lucifer supposed to do with that, Duke.

He cleared his throat. "No, but it'll be good for him," he continued, as if Duke hadn't said anything. "I did just give Him a phone, I just need to teach Him how to swipe. I'm sure He'll find someone given enough guidance."

Duke let out a little sigh and flicked Octavia a "what can we do?" glance.

"If you say so."

Octavia met Duke's gaze, and gave him a little shrug. As far as wild ideas went, at least this one didn't sound like it was going to get anyone injured?

"Yeah," she agreed, but mildly.

"Right," Octavia said.

What did you... really say to that?
