Los Angeles, Tuesday

It was a nice, bright morning in Los Angeles, just a few days before Lucifer's self-imposed ultimatum about leaving ended. He remained on a quest to apologize for his therapist-inflicted overthinking and subsequent attempts to break up with Duke and Octavia, and so, today...

...Today it was time to spoil Octavia with a visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific.

He hummed brightly to himself as he paid for their tickets, then slid past the nice cashier and into the aquarium properly.

"Right," Lucifer said, his lip still curled in a snarl as the red faded again. "Excuse me."

He slid past Zadkiel and his bloody staff. At least the route to Father was unobstructed this time.

Octavia took his phone, and pored over the page.

"And you don't even have to have diving experience," she murmured. And then frowned. "Wait, this is in San Diego?"

The fact that they hadn't both known and gone during the trip to San Diego they'd already taken was now offensive in restrospect.

"Yes," Lucifer said, tilting his head. "... I should have thought to look into that earlier."

It was possible he remembered this was a possibility because he'd seen a billboard at one point or another.

Octavia handed him his phone back.

"Maybe we'll have to make up for that."

"We still have a few days to kill," Lucifer said brightly. "Why not make San Diego part of it?"

Octavia's expression brightened some. "I could do that."

It was getting out of Los Angeles, even if not as far away as she might've liked.

"Then I'll see what I can arrange later this week," Lucifer said, and leaned in to press a kiss to her cheek.

"Mochof," Octavia hummed, letting him.

"Shall we move on to the bigger ones?"

Octavia cast one last glance at the little sharks, gave one of them one last little touch before drawing her hand from the water.

"Sure."

Lucifer made a grandiose gesture towards the aquarium building up ahead. "Lead on, miss Shark."

Octavia snorted. Then, purely on a whim, caught his hand in hers.

Then led on, pulling him along.

Lucifer chuckled softly, and let her pull him with her into the building. It was pleasantly cool inside, and the large glass windows that met them on their way in showed a glimpse of the ocean life beyond.

Once they rounded the corner, of course, they'd find themselves face to face with the tell-tale tape of a crime scene.

But that was still several steps away.

Duke gave Zadkiel a long stare before following.

"Dick," he muttered. It wasn't the worst thing he could call the guy, but sometimes a simple classic felt best.

Duke bounced his fingers at her.

"And what's to stop someone else from planning said retirement once they've been handed over? You don't actually have to carry your whole family, Luce."

"Unfortunately, in this case, I may have to," Lucifer said irritably. "Lest the sky actually fall down on our heads."

He took a big gulp of his drink.

He had no answer to the other question. (Besides a dawning feeling of dread and inevitability he didn't want to voice, because that might make it real.)

Octavia didn't bother.

She just glided coolly past Zadkiel.

Octavia took note of that lack of an answer, but she didn't press.

She gave up on perching on the couch, and just slid down until she could stretch out on it, instead.

God's apron read 'Let There Be Burgers'.

He looked up from the grill with a grand smile on his face. "Hello, my sons! And Octavia and Duke! Welcome to my retirement party!" he gushed. He grinned harder. "Can you smell what I'm cooking?" Beat. "I learned that phrase from Linda."

"Dad," Lucifer hissed, "I thought your retirement was supposed to be a secret...?"

"It was, and thank you for keeping it," Dad said brightly.

It was hard to argue with stakes on a celestial scale, much that Duke often wished he could. So he just grumbled under his breath about obnoxious fathers and went to join Octavia on the couch.

"We're going to be stuck here forever."

"Man's gotta come out in his own time," Duke said, shrugging a little helplessly.

Maybe this would help speed things along.

"Absolutely not," Lucifer said, reaching for the whiskey again. "I refuse to let my Father's mess stop me from returning to Fandom with both of you."

He paused.

"Hm, that makes me think, actually..."

Maybe? Octavia wasn't hopeful, though.

"This is another one of those moments where I see the family resemblance," she muttered, mostly to Duke.

Octavia pulled her legs up to make room for Duke, but only so that she'd then be able to flop them across his lap as soon as he sat down.

"About?" she rasped.
