Lucifer's Mansion, Sunday Night

It had certainly been a complicated week, hadn't it? Luckily, it had ended before the weekend, and Lucifer, Duke and Octavia had had all Saturday to recover.

That didn't mean Lucifer hadn't been slightly surprised that Octavia was still game for date night. But he had grasped it with every bit of enthusiasm he could foster. And yes, that did mean dinner had featured a genuinely ridiculous amount of tropical fruit.

"Suppose I should've put a protein in there," he mused, settling back and eyeing his empty dessert bowl with satisfaction.

"Including the time with your dick in my mouth?" Octavia couldn't help asking, trying to still keep her tone raspy and light even with this -- obvious sudden shift in the mood.

The urge to tug the robe more firmly around herself was about as sudden, though she fought it, for now.

Sudden shift in mood? Lucifer had gradually completely lost any sense of what she wanted from him, while attempting to ignore or embrace comments that had, frankly, been frustrating and stung a bit. And then she'd told him his attempt to roll with it was completely wrong, again.

He had no bloody clue where to go from here and a vague desire to stalk out of the room in a huff.

But he took a breath, instead.

"Well, you remain terrific at blowjobs," he allowed. Another breath. Then he found himself walking back to the sofa.

Well, thank fuck for that, because it made Octavia reaching out a hand towards him feel like less of a fraught move. Because it had been sudden for the person who'd still been playing and who wasn't any more of a mindreader than he was, yes.

And who was now looking at him with only thinly-veiled concern in her eyes.

Whereas Lucifer felt as if he'd spent the entire past ten minutes or so scrambling to keep up with her, rather than playing. It had, perhaps, not been the best path to take so quickly after a genuine and somewhat painful failure on his part to anticipate her wants.

But he reminded himself she wasn't doing it on purpose. Took her hand, and sat down next to her on the sofa. "Sorry," he said. "I can play 'does dirty talk' and I can play 'silence the naughty brat', but it feels like four things are happening at once here and I can't tell anymore which parts are which."

Octaavia brought their hands up to her mouth and kissed his knuckles. It seemed necessary.

"Why are we so bad at asking?" she wondered in a mutter.

"Because this is the first time in our lives we actually can?" Lucifer said, sagging a little into her.

Octavia sagged a little in return.

"It's stupid."

She got to say that because she was including herself in it.

"It is," Lucifer said. He kissed the top of her head. "But we're getting better at it."

Octavia made a noise like a soft 'eugh', and burrowed against him a little more.

"I tried to get you to tell me a story," she murmured. "Basically. You know, when you thought it sounded like a joke? And we just got caught on that instead."

"I tried to get back to that," Lucifer sighed. "But you kept mocking me, and I didn't want to ruin the mood by genuinely stopping you, so..."

"You know you can just put your hand over my mouth if that's getting in your way."

It was less of a 'you should already know this' and more 'for future reference'.

"Noted," Lucifer said. He gave her hand a little squeeze. "I became frustrated," he said, "Then thought I'd finally found a track that worked for us, and then you... well."

"'Cause I was still waiting for my story," Octavia murmured, quietly.

Lucifer sighed softly. "And I felt like I had no-- air, no space, to come up with one," he said.

"I'm sorry." Oh, that was even quieter. "I just felt like you weren't hearing me. Especially since you went for the drawer."

"Darling, I was trying the entire time," Lucifer said, shaking his head. "Tried to move on from the misunderstanding, you brought it back to me not getting it. Then tried to start a story again, and you told me it wasn't interesting. Tried a different sort of dirty talk, and you told me that wasn't proof. Then I tried to dirty talk about how I would silence your demands for proof, and you started heckling me."

"I get it now," Octavia muttered, even as some of that shame was starting to creep back in at the edges. "But I didn't -- it wasn't what I was after, so I didn't recognize it."

"Then I still don't understand what you were after," Lucifer said, a hint of desperation in his voice.

"I just wanted you to sit down and tell me about a -- a hypothetical, and not make it about what you maybe wanted to do to me right now. A story."

Octavia's voice wasn't entirely desperation-free, either, not with how the words poured out of her.

"And, yes, I get it, you were trying to go back to the ice but what I heard there was that -- my fantasy either had to be a joke, or when I wasn't joking it wasn't proper so you had to change it. So..." She lost some steam, chewed on her lip. "So I just tried to play. Like maybe I could brat you into it."

"I'm sorry," Lucifer said, swallowing every stupid, pointless protest he might have had to one or two of the details. "I certainly didn't intend to make your fantasies feel like they weren't correct. Of course they are. They're yours."

"It didn't feel like it," Octavia murmured, "so I didn't want to push that one."

She swallowed - harder than she'd thought she would.

"I'm sorry."

Lucifer slid his other arm around her, and tried to pull her in fully.

Octavia let him. Burrowed more against his chest with a helpless shudder.

"I'm sorry," she murmured again. "I didn't relize it was that hard for you. I'm sorry."

"It's all right," Lucifer whispered. "I love you. I want you to feel wanted, and that your desires are respected, and I'm so sorry I did otherwise."

He rubbed her back soothingly. "You can tell me, next time. No need to-- brat me into it. I promise."

Octavia shook her head. "I wouldn't have if I'd realized you weren't there with me anymore."
