A Spot in the Preserve, Sunday Evening

Lucifer and Octavia had their Sunday rituals down to a T. And that-- well, that made Lucifer a bit contrarian, at times. There was nothing wrong with their tradition, healing as it was, but doing the same thing over and over again wasn't always that exciting.

And, all right. Perhaps he was still processing his own healing breakdown a week after the fact.

So he'd promised Octavia a surprise. Shown up with some take out bags and a smile.

She'd probably figured out where they were going well before the first trees came into view. It was a bit chilly, that couldn't be helped, but still: Lucifer thought the ambiance would help. "Almost there."

'Incredible', he said, flying above the island.

If the woods had looked unreal from this height, the water wasn't much less so, glinting with whatever light it could catch.

It was beautiful. Made Octavia fall silent again.

He'd been able to fly all his life.

Octavia was something else.

Lucifer didn't dare break the silence further. So he didn't. He just... kept at it. Slow. Steady.

Octavia watched the ground below, or what little she could see of it through the trees.

It felt like looking at a map, the way she could pick out some of the places she usually went to, in the preserve.

Lucifer circled slowly back over the preserve, descending a little as he went. Bringing those trees back into focus, so she could see they were real.

He glanced at her face, curious.

Her eyes were looking a little big.

Flying lower cut down on some of the surreal of it all, but being a little closer to touching distance brought with it its own sense of weirdness.

It was a lot.

Lower and lower they went.

"Hold on tighter," Lucifer instructed quietly, as he picked a large tree-branch that looked like it could hold some weight and moved towards it.

Well, he didn't have to tell Octavia twice.

She held on tight, looking around to figure out what he was planning.

He touched down gently on the branch. With a little shift, Lucifer found himself seated, Octavia in his lap.

In the canopy.

Octavia's laugh was a startled, slightly broken sound.

Because this was ridiculous.

Lucifer laughed along, a little self-conscious. "I thought this might be less-- surreal."

[okteiviakom]

"It's not."

But it was that in a way that seemed to make her laugh - even if it was in a bewildered sort of way. So, probably still helpful.

"Sorry," Lucifer laughed, unable to stop himself. "I'm sorry."

And Octavia just found herself snickering some more, her face turned against the crook of his neck.

Lucifer's arms came up to hug her closer to him, smiling.

There wasn't much 'closer' left for her to go, anymore. She was there, snug in his arms.

Though as her laughter died down again, she was slowly turning her head, to take a peek at the view.

There was a closer he could get. Not her.

"It is a bit peaceful up here, though," Lucifer observed, after a moment or so. Looking up at the sky.

Octavia was looking down towards the ground. Even if it made her feel a little woozy to do so.

"Yeah," she murmured.

"Mmhm," Lucifer hummed.

He let himself pay attention to the wind on his skin.

"It's just so... empty."

Even with her hesitation, that still didn't feel like the right word. Octavia frowned gently to herself, trying to think of another one.

"Empty?" Lucifer asked. "I don't think it's empty. It's... quiet? Serene."

[okteiviakom]

"Yeah," Octavia murmured. "I just mean like..."

Like they were a little closer to space than to the ground, somehow.

"There's nothing up here but us."

[my_own_advocate]

"Ah," Lucifer said, glancing up again. "I suppose that is true..."

[okteiviakom]

"Not even birds, right now," Octavia said, tipping her head against his shoulder a little.

She paused.

"Unless you count."

(Maybe she was getting over some of the initial shock of being up here.)

"I am not a bird," Lucifer informed her primly.

Octavia snorted.

"Is that so?"
