Baltimore Boating Center, Wednesday Afternoon

Duke wanted a small boat to add to their growing fleet. Lucifer-- wanted to take Duke out on a date, which he hadn't done in a little while, and the trip to and from would be scenic. Afterwards, they could grab some food at a nearby restaurant and make a night of it. Possibly ending at the mansion.

It all seemed to make sense.

And so he pulled into the marina well into the afternoon, the wind in his hair and a smile on his face. "Here we are," he said, bringing the car to a stop. "Home to many a baby boat."

He was just saying it to annoy Duke, at this point.

"It's classy," Duke told him. "This whole boat has a certain class to it."

Lucifer should appreciate that, right?

"It's certainly much nicer than some of the other options you've shown me today," Lucifer had to allow. "And I much prefer the wood over the generic white of many of the other sloops."

"Absolutely," Duke agreed with feeling. "And it's a perfect size for 1 to 3 people. We could take it out for picnics along the preserve. All the wilderness Tavi wants with none of hiking you hate."

"I'm working on that," Lucifer sort-of-protested. "Like last weekend."

"I'm proud of you," Duke assured him. "But I bet you'll still like a break from hiking now and then."

[my_own_advocate]

"Obviously," Lucifer said. "Though the Rouge has sufficed for that in recent years."

He glanced at Duke. "Which isn't to say I mind the thought of doing it on another vessel. Not at all."

"One with no camouflage?" Duke asked.

He made his way to the hatch leading below decks. The space below was small, but well put together. "You could even take naps down here while Octavia hikes and I fish."

"It does show more of its class on the outsider, rather than keeping it a tightly-guarded secret until you push past its lived-in exterior," Lucifer agreed.

Not that that extended to, you know, anyone else.

He slipped past Duke into the downstairs area, his fingers immediately landing on the seat cushions. "Hm. Might have to replace these with something nicer."

"A nice luxury nautical plaid?" Duke suggested, grinning.

Lucifer rolled his eyes. "Think something softer with a high thread count."

[betterthanaplan]

"One: softer is not necessarily better in a spot that's going to get wet really regularly." Duke held up his hand. "Two: plaid is a color scheme, not a texture."

"As a color scheme it's a screaming warning signal about everything else to do with the fabric."

[betterthanaplan]

"You are such a snob," Duke said fondly. "I am going to find the softest, most luxurious, Egyptian cotton plaid and make you eat those words."

Lucifer snorted. "You're welcome to try," he said. "You'll fail."

"Uh huh," Duke said with a snort. "We'll see."

Even Lucifer couldn't object to cashmere, after all. And plenty of that came in plaid.

It ultimately wouldn't really matter, as Lucifer was likely to trip, fall, and have sex with Duke on it either way.

But for now, he rolled his eyes. "So is this a winner, then? The baby boat of your dreams?"

"Small boat," Duke said. "But yeah. Yeah, I think we have a winner."

"All because of some fancy woodwork," Lucifer teased.

"And the length," Duke said. "And the general . . . air of rustic elegance."

[my_own_advocate]

"Rustic elegance," Lucifer echoed, amused, approaching him.

"Don't tell me: that's an oxymoron?"

[my_own_advocate]

"I'd call it a perfect description of Duke Crocker, personally," Lucifer said, settling his hands on Duke's hips. "From a furniture catalogue, but still."

Duke let out a low chuckle.

"So . . . you approve, then?"

[my_own_advocate]

"Well, it's not what I would choose," Lucifer said, leaning in a bit. "But it's very you in a way that isn't unpleasant."

[betterthanaplan]

"No, you'd choose some fiberglass yacht lined in gold, with a built in wave-pool," Duke said. And leaned in to kiss Lucifer. "We've all got our own strengths."
